Forest Hill Liberal Democrat councillor Cllr Philip Peake, arriving at Lewisham Town Hall on Wednesday, was amazed to see the amount of grit in front of the civic offices.

"I've never seen so much grit spread in one place," commented Philip.

"At a time when the council are telling us that residents' can't expect any pavements to be gritted - apart from outside schools and old-peoples' homes - it looks hugely wasteful."
