New opinion poll puts Lib Dems into second place

11.24.27pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 28th Sep 2009

An Ipsos Mori survey released today puts the Tories on 36%, Labour on 24% and the Liberal Democrats on 25%.That compares with last month's results which had the Tories 43%, Labour 26% and the Liberal Democrats 17%.

This is first time that this polling company have shown Labour to be in third place in a poll since 1982 (though other pollsters have shown it before), and is in line with other recent polls showing a decline in support for Labour and a rise in Lib Dem share.

"Our rising support in opinion polls shows how well the public are responding to Nick Clegg and the Lib Dem message," comments Lib Dem Lewisham West & Penge parliamentary spokesman. Alex Feakes, " and is in line with what our own canvassing here is telling us. As one of the Lib Dem's top 50 seats against Labour, this poll shows we're in with a chance of pulling off a shock result on General Election day."
