Recession costs Lewisham £234 million

12.51.47pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 30th Jun 2009

Official figures show that falling property values have cost Lewisham Council £234 million in the last twelve months according to research undertaken by Lib Dem Councillor Mark Bennett.

"This is on top of a 22% increase in Council Tax and rent arrears," continued Cllr Bennett, "as well as a 20% increase in the amount paid in Housing Benefit. We don't know how much of this can be attributed directly to the recession but no one can doubt the recession is affecting us locally and this of course is just the start."
