Backing Brian's bid to Save Local Post Offices12.37.08pm GMT Tue 19th Feb 2008 Lewisham West & Penge Lib Dems are backing London Mayoral candidate Brian Paddick's campaign to save local post offices.
Following thousands of post office closures during recent years, Gordon Brown's Labour Government now say that a further 2,500 are to close. Lewisham is hit hard again with 3 post office closures depleting an already scarce local service. Bromley borough is suffering 5 closures, including the branch in Beckenham's High Street. "We've seen with the recent changes to the post office in Forest Hill how much people value their local services. The Liberal Democrats believe that post offices perform a valuable community service and that the Government should do everything it can to stave off these latest wave of closures," said Alex Feakes, Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Lewisham West & Penge. Brian Paddick said: "Post offices are often the heart of a local community and we must all do our utmost to preserve them. "The trouble with economic arguments is that they leave people out of the equation and they are the most important part. "Many people rely on a local post office, and to close 20% of London's post offices just shows a complete disregard for the needs of the local community." Related Link:
